Permabit Unveils New Albireo Edition for Big Data Environments

Permabit beefed up its OEM embedded dedupe solution with a new version of its flagship and a big partnership with Cibecs.

Albireo, one of the fastest deduplication solutions on the market, is now available in a Data Protection Edition that’s designed to accommodate the “rampant data growth” in the enterprise and enhance “backup methods of businesses that have progressed beyond traditional backup technologies.”

“Many organizations continue to re-architect their backup infrastructures and support procedures in an effort to modernize their approach to handle new data types and large workload volumes, and to improve backup and restore times. Deduplication technology is among one of the key items being sought,” said Dave Russell, research vice president, Gartner.

According to the company, the offering is compatible with the cloud environments and data-driven apps that modernized IT departments run today: it can be integrated with standalone software, data protection appliances or cloud backup services. Permabit is touting multi petabyte scalability and reduced memory usage as two advantages that OEMs can realize by licensing its software.

Cibecs, a provider of end point data protection services, took the bait. According to a fresh announcement, the company has implemented the Data Protection Edition to reduce data volumes from remote desktops and laptops that run either Windows or Linux.

Earlier this week Permabit optimized the Albireo SDK and its Virtual Data Optimizer (VDO) software to run on flash storage. This update addresses the big shift to SSDs in the enterprise, driven by vendors such as Fusion-io and Violin Memory.

Previously, research firm Data Mobility awarded the company a “Top Information Management and Storage Vendor” status.  The reason: the very unique way Albireo tackles deduplication.
