When you mention the name John McAfee, the first word that comes to mind is “anti-virus.” The man helped computers fight off digital parasites, saving computers from falling victim of lethal viruses and malware. He was a hero in the late eighties when he first created his anti-virus program and allowed users to download it for free.

The hero has fallen and McAfee’s new title is “murderer.” According to Belize police, he is currently on the run from murder charges against Gregory Faull, who McAfee had been on the outs with for some time. Faull’s body was found gunned down in a hallway of the house by a housekeeper who came to do her daily chores on Sunday morning.

When police arrived at the scene, there were no signs of forced entry and two items were discovered to be missing: an iPhone and a laptop with an unknown serial number. A motive has not yet been found, but police say they have several leads.

Faull, a California native, had filed a report against McAfee at the mayor’s office last Wednesday,  claiming the anti-virus pioneer was exhibiting “roguish behavior” and shooting off guns. The fight was apparently over dogs.

Over the past few years, McAfee’s behavior had grown very peculiar. He had distanced himself from expatriates and began hanging around some of the most notoriously known gangsters of Belize. But the story gets significantly weirder. McAfee began posting on Bluelight, a drug-focused Russian message board under the username “stuffmonger,” posting over 200 times about purifying bath salts using compounds available for purchase over the Internet.

“I’m a huge fan of MDPV. I think it’s the finest drug ever conceived, not just for the indescribable hypersexuality, but also for the smooth euphoria and smooth comedown.”

Although MDPV was recently banned in the US, it is still legal in Belize. According to users, the drug, which comes from a South African plant khat, says that it is a powerful mind-altering substance.

McAfee even comments on the dangers of freebasing the drug. “I had visual and auditory hallucinations and the worst paranoia of my life,” he wrote. His last post was on April 1, 2011, but he revealed himself as John and described how he was pursuing quorum-sensing compounds. He also posted pictures of his property in Orange Walk.

McAfee’s drug use only explains why he isolated himself and why he associated himself with some of the most hardened gangsters in Belize. The crime, however, is still being investigated.
