Breaking Analysis: Will RIM’s $10K Developer Incentive Risk Pay Off?

RIM announced a $10,000 guarantee program to developers as an incentive for creating Blackberry 10 apps. If a developer does not make $10,000 in revenue on their certified Blackberry app in the first year, RIM will pay the difference. However, there are some deterrents to keep Joe Schmoe Developer from slapping together some code and expecting a $10,000 check. SiliconANGLE Contributing Editor John Casaretto explained, “There are some fail-safes in the program. It does have to be certified by Blackberry and a third party to see if it’s a valid application or one that’s worth having.”

Another part of the program is that they are giving away access to a new prototype device called BlackBerry Dev Alpha C, on which developers can test their applications. They’re only giving out 1500 devices, and who gets one is determined by a tiered points system, which is based on several factors, such as how many apps they have in the market now, whether they have a BlackBerry certified app or whether they’re a BlackBerry Elite Member, to name a few. An extra incentive RIM is offering to developers is access to Appcelerator Cloud Services for free for one year. As many as 10,000 developers will receive this benefit.

Casaretto gave credit to RIM for making the effort to boost their app eco-system. He said, “You know, they have to try. They have a lot of ground to catch up on.” He acknowledged that there will be many other outside forces they’ll have to contend with in the market, but overall, believes this is a good first step for RIM.  See the entire segment with Kristin Feledy and John Casaretto on the Morning NewsDesk Show.
