Head-to-Head: Apple Maps vs. Google Maps

Google Maps app is now available for Apple iOS 6 users and many Apple Maps users are very grateful for the addition.  One user even commented that he almost died in Australia and is now very thankful that a more reliable can be used.

We all know how bad Apple Maps is, but just for the fun of it, lets compare Apple Maps and Google Maps.

Maps

Google Maps: Road maps, street view, public transportation,

Apple Maps: Standard maps, Hybrid, Satellite.

Interface

Google Maps: Uses typing and swiping gestures as well as voice commands to get directions.  It has a streamlined interface with the web app, so using it will all seem familiar to most users.

Apple Maps: There’s typing and swiping gestures to use the app, but since it is a navigation app, you can also use your voice to get directions.  Tap the Quick Route button and it will instantly give you turn-by-turn directions to any search result.

Search

Google: Find addresses, places and businesses around the world with Google local search. Discover places to eat, drink, shop and play, with ratings and local reviews. Sign in to sync your searches, directions, and favorite places between your computer and your phone.    Has an expandable info sheet that shows the address, opening hours, ratings and reviews, images, directions and other information

Apple: Tapping a pin on the map or a search result presents you with a card full of useful information regarding the location. You can view photos, tap to dial phone numbers, get an address, find websites, peruse Yelp ratings and reviews and even find great deals to save you money.

Directions

Google: Get voice guided, turn-by-turn driving directions, find your way by train, bus, subway or walking directions as well as access live traffic information in cities across the world.

Apple: Turn-by-turn spoken directions, 3D view, and real-time traffic information. The screen turns into a 3D perspective view of the road and features large signs and arrows superimposed over the image to show you which way to go and how long it’s going to take to get there even if your screen is locked.  Similar to Google Maps, if you make a turn, the view changes to show you where you’re heading next and if you ever miss a turn, it automatically reroutes you and adjusts your ETA.

Street View and Imagery

Google:  View 360-degree panoramas of places around the globe with Street View, see inside more than 100,000 businesses worldwide and view high resolution satellite imagery of locations around the world.

Apple: Features Flyover wherein images of select metro areas are shot from the air and it gives you photo-realistic, interactive 3D views.  No street views.  You can zoom, pan, tilt and rotate to explore the landmarks.

Availability

Google: Available in 30+ countries in 28 languages and not all the features are immediately available.

Apple: Available in 180+ countries but just like Google Maps, some of the feautres are only available in certain areas.
