Unity Moves In With Sony for PlayStation 4, Vita, PS mobile and Sony cloud

Unity, the acclaimed cross-platform game engine maker, has tied up with Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) to bring out tools for development for all of the SCE’s PlayStation platforms. Technically speaking, Unity’s technology will now support the PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, PS Mobile and Sony’s upcoming cloud gaming service. Both companies entered a strategic partnership last week.

Unity for PlayStation will allow Unity developers to create games for PSM more efficiently without the need for an additional PlayStation®Mobile SDK. As Both Unity for PlayStation and PSM SDK use the .NET framework, this will allow developers for easy transition between the two tools. As of now, Unity is already available on PlayStation 3.

Unity is pretty much excited about this partnership, which is quite evident from the statement of CEO and co-founder David Helgason,

“Work is still in early stages so it will be more than a couple of months before we have something for you all to play with, but we’re hitting the ground running in the efforts to give you all more options to publish your awesome games. We’re looking to begin rolling these tools out this fall, though it’s good to keep in mind that the different tools will have different schedules.

Sony Computer Entertainment is really committed to making their platforms approachable to all kinds of developers, so this partnership is going to make a lot of sense for both companies… and a lot of sense for the Unity community! They’re really focused on bringing the most creative studios, with an emphasis on independent developers, on board their platforms and we are leading the charge to make development awesome for studios of all sizes.”

And yes, the other party is happy too!

“We are very happy to be working with Unity Technologies to deliver Unity for our PlayStation® platforms,” said Teiji Yutaka, Senior Vice President, Technology Platform of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. “PlayStation gamers can look forward to playing a broad array of new creative games from Unity’s global community of developers, which includes some of the best independent talent in the industry.”

With this addition, developers have something to fall in love with about Sony consoles that they won’t need to totally re-code in order to port between platforms. In a way, it will help give those consoles a leap into the mobile abstraction cloud, by providing games that can play basically the same at home (on the PS4) as well as on the go (on the PS Vita.)
