Apple Blocks Patent Infringement Claim from Google-Motorola

In today’s mobile and social news roundup: Apple blocks patent infringement claim; Google Glass coming in 2014; Nokia wins injunction against HTC One; and Tumblr rolled out ads in mobile apps.

Apple blocks patent infringement claim

Apple has successfully blocked a patent infringement claim originally pursued by Motorola, but was continued by Google when it acquired the phone maker.  The patent in question deals with the technology that prevents the accidental touching of the screen when the phone is placed near a person’s face, like when making or accepting a call.

The US International Trade Commission has dismissed the patent claim in which Apple argued that the sensor technology used for the said feature is “obvious” as others in the industry also made earlier efforts to tackle the problem of accidental dialing.

Google Glass coming in 2014

In an interview with BBC, Google chair Eric Schmidt announced that the public availability of Google Glass is expected in 2014, not later this year as many hoped for.  The Explorer Edition has already started shipping to developers and other winners of its Google Glass Explorer contest, and Schmidt believes that there will still be changes on the tech glasses based on how it was received by the early users.

“It would be fair to say that there will be thousands of these in use by developers over the next months and based on their feedback we’ll make some product changes and it’s probably a year-ish away,” Schmidt said.

Nokia wins injunction against HTC One

Nokia has won a court injunction against HTC One, banning the Taiwanese company from using certain microphone components in its flagship device.  Nokia stated that upon inspection, the HTC One high-amplitude audio-capture technology is from ST Micro, which is the same supplier used by the Finnish company.

The Amsterdam District Court ruling prevents ST Micro from selling the parts to HTC for devices to be sold in the Netherlands.  The ruling is effective until March 2014, and HTC has already stated that it will be looking for alternatives immediately.

Tumblr rolls out ads in mobile apps

Sponsored posts appeared on Tumblr almost a year ago and ever since, brands have “created some truly delightful blogs and racked up tens of millions of notes on their posts,” writes Tumblr.  The microblogging platform and social networking site decided to make these sponsored posts available on its iOS and Android apps.

The sponsored posts for mobile will be coming from ABC Entertainment and ABC Family, GE, Pepsi and Warner Bros and Tumblr users will be seeing up to four ads from the said companies per day.  The sponsored posts differ from regular posts as they feature an animated “$ sign” above the posts.  Though the sponsored posts already started rolling out, not all the users will see the new ads immediately.  The gradual roll out will push through the end of May.
