What Merchants Need for Mobile Payments : Tips + Insight from Braintree CEO

The CEO of Braintree, Bill Ready, sat down during Accel Partners Symposium 2013 on theCube with SiliconAngle founder John Furrier and Wikibon’s Jeff Kelly.

Braintree is a payment platform for online and mobile commerce companies. Ready feels that the next move in mobile devices will revolve around context driven experiences. In the past, the mobile experience was limited to merely being on the go with a device. Now with the GPS/location-determining capabilities of devices it adds more contexts to the experience. More is known about the consumer than was previously able. Consumers will want relevant things available to them in a context-aware environment. They will not want to have to re-enter their information every time they want to make a purchase. The mobile device will be able to know the user and how they shop.

When asked about privacy and security in relation to mobile transactions, Ready states that mobile transactions can be more secure than a normal transaction. The reason for this is linked to the amount of information that a mobile device can tell about its user. The sensitive information associated with a mobile transaction can be stored in a secure location, with the mobile device being used to identify the consumer. The mobile device can be used for 2-way communication, so if verification of the user’s identity is needed, it can be instantly done.

Ready states that mobile devices will be the primary computing device in the near future mainly for e-commerce, so it is important for merchants to take note. They need to incorporate a mobile strategy for their services. In regards to the future of payments, he says that payment providers will be chosen by both merchants and consumers. The providers that deliver the easiest connection between the two will be the ones to prosper. See the entire video below.
