Cisco Injects Programmability into Networking Lineup @ Cisco Live

Cisco will support software-defined networking across its entire portfolio within the next 12 months, starting with the two new routers it unveiled at this week’s Cisco Live 2013 conference.

The ISR 4451-AX is a high-performance branch platform that offers up to 2Gbps of forward performance with native WAN optimization. It’s complemented by the ASR 1000-AX WAN, an edge router that integrates Application Visibility and Control and AppNav capabilities with virtual wide area application services.

The 4451-AX is available immediately, and the 1000-AX will launch next month. Both will be made compatible with Cisco’s Open Network Environment (ONE) architecture in the first quarter of 2014.

The two routers were announced alongside several other products, including the Catalyst 6800 switch series. An offshoot of Cisco’s popular Catalyst 6500 family, the line includes three solutions: the 880-X, the 6800ia and the 6807-XL modular campus backbone switch. This latter system is a seven-slot, 10-rack-unit behemoth that supports 10/40/100 Gbps connectivity, delivers speeds up to 880Gbps per slot, and provides 11.4 Tbps of switching capacity for each port. Cisco stated that all three Catalyst 6800 products will be programmable, but did not specify when they will support its ONE API.

The last addition to the company’s network portfolio is an upgraded supervisor engine for its 4500-E chassis-based access switch.

“The network is more important than ever before in enabling the user experience in today’s applications,” said Rob Soderbery, the head of Cisco’s Enterprise Networking Group. “Network intelligence, simplicity and innovation will be the key factor in unlocking new business opportunities and competitive differentiation for our customers.”

Cisco is expected to follow up its product announcements by launching Insieme Networks, a spin-in that is currently in stealth mode. The Insieme team is comprised of veterans from Andiamo and Nuova, two previous Cisco spin-ins.
