Apple has officially filed a trademark for “iWatch” with Japan’s patent office, seeking to protect the name it has coined and further solidifying rumors that the company is indeed developing a smartwatch.

Just weeks after Apple’s anual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) where several updates were announced but no major devices were revealed, these latest details of Apple’s trademark goals indicate the Cupertino company is very likely looking to release a smartwatch in the near future.  Despite a smartwatch’s inability to fully revive Apple’s lost market share from the past twelve months, a fresh gadget from the iPhone maker could certainly spark new interest in the company.

Apple’s iWatch would also face some competition right out the gate – some manufacturers like Samsung have already unveiled details for their smartwatches, while Google’s also working on an Android-powered smartwatch, rounding out the search giant’s new-but-growing lineup of smart devices.  Joining us now to discuss Apple’s potentially bumpy entrance into the smartwatch market is Casaretto.
