Cloudera Reigns Over Europe, Catches Up to Hadoop’s American Success
In a recent survey conducted by data processing software vendor Syncsort on 300 attendees of two Big Data conferences in Europe, it was revealed that Cloudera is the widely-adopted Hadoop distribution platform in Europe.
It revealed that 41 percent of the frameworks use in Europe is Cloudera, followed by core Apache code at 30 percent, Hortonworks at 18 percent and MapR at nine percent.
According to Wikibon Principal Research Contributor Jeff Kelly, it should be noted that Cloudera has been around the longest, so it’s not really surprising that they came out on top of the survey. But he found it interesting that of those 300 or so who participated in the survey, about a quarter were not really interested in implementing Hadoop for their business although they were attending Hadoop conferences. This essentially means that we’re still in the early days of Big Data and Hadoop – there’s still some lingering doubts over the market’s framework offerings.
Of the attendees surveyed, thirty-percent said they had been using Hadoop for over a year, and thirty-four percent said they were experimenting with the software. Kelly noted that Europe has a tendency to be six months to a year behind adoption trends in the US.
“Generally speaking, Europe is a little bit behind the US in adoption of new technology. Generally it tracks fairly consistent with what we’re seeing in the US,” Kelly says. “Again, keep in mind, this is a survey of companies that have chosen to go to a Hadoop conference, presumably they’re more interested in Hadoop than your average enterprise, but nevertheless it’s a good sign that we’re seeing companies at this level of adoption using Hadoop for a year plus.
“As I mentioned, still very, very early days, but clearly Hadoop is gaining traction I think it’s increasingly becoming kind of a standard to serve as the foundation of the next generation data platform, if you will, around the storage and some of the more complex data processing capabilities, what companies are looking to do,” Kelly stated.
