Project Tox, also known as Tox, is a FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) secure alternative to all-in-one communication platform, which allows users to connect with friends and loved ones without anyone else listening in. The goal of the Tox open source project is nothing less than a secure instant messenger that respects the privacy of users. The developers want to offer both the simplicity and the functionality of the market leader, but to create a configuration-free P2P Skype replacement.

The application is also aiming to replace all the features of Skype which is very hard to use for simple user.

Easy Usable Cryptography

In particular, the developers want to integrate the handling of cryptographic keys in the program so that user no longer needs to take care of the key management.  In terms of cryptography, the project relies on the EU-funded NaCl library. NaCl has the advantage that the library contains many common operations and make these available through a high-level API, which is designed to reduce the introduction of errors in cryptography for the Tox-developers.

The main feature of using this technology is for key generation and signing a simple implementation of the encryption features in Tox. The developers emphasize that the user has nothing to do with the creation of the necessary key pair when he does not want that. User will simply have to open the program and without any account configuration will be capable of adding people to his friends list and start conversing with them.

Peer-to-Peer Communication

Tox is not relying on centralized infrastructure as users are going to do communication via peer-to-peer communicating. To find other users, a system is used that is similar to the distributed hash tables in torrents. A corresponding unique hash of the user is created when the application first starts.

For the currently existing interface, the team is using QT 5 based GUI. The application will therefore not only on work on Windows, Mac OS X or Linux, but also on mobile systems like iOS and Android.
