Splunk + Pentaho for Non-Geeks : Unlocking the Value of Machine Data

Splunk has partnered with data integration specialist Pentaho to deliver a new solution for crunching data generated by applications, servers, sensors and other connected devices.

Pentaho Business Analytics and Splunk Enterprise combines technology from both firms to integrate Splunk’s machine data analytics technology with relational databases, Hadoop, NoSQL deployments and enterprise application data. The platform also includes advanced visualization and ad hoc analysis functions that enable business users to gain insights into their information without consulting a data scientist.

“Users can download Pentaho Business Analytics for Splunk Enterprise from Splunkbase, to be able to combine Splunk machine data with a variety of other traditional Pentaho data sources. The bi-directional integration lets business users access, explore, analyze and visualize machine data to extract real, actionable information,” said Eddie White the executive vice president of business development for Pentaho. “Our alliance with Splunk will make it much faster and easier for users to manage and gain insight from this highly valuable source of data, combined with other data for context.”

  • Extending their Hadoop presence

Both Splunk and Pentaho are looking to extend their presence in the Hadoop ecosystem. Two weeks ago, the latter introduced an”‘adaptive Big Data layer” that serves as a common interface for distributions from Cloudera, Hortonworks, MapR and Intel, as well as Cassandra and MongoDB.

Pentaho unveiled its latest solution in conjunction with the debut of Hunk, a tool that – as the name implies – pairs Splunk with Hadoop. The software makes it easier for users to extract insights from their unstructured data by layering Splunk’s simple query language on top of the batch analytics platform. Clint Sharp, a senior product manager with Splunk, told SiliconANGLE’s Kyt Dotson that Hunk turns data scientists into gatekeepers for analysis.
