VMware Reshuffles Board of Directors

VMware announced this week that veteran executive Pamela Craig has taken up the newly vacated board seat of Intel’s Renee James. The virtualization giant said that James resigned from the board to focus on her responsibilities as the chip maker’s president, a post she has held since May.

Craig is stepping into James’ shoes after a 34-year career with Accenture, where she worked in various operational roles and made history as the first female chief financial officer. In her new role, Craig will pick up where James left off and serve as a member of VMware’s mergers and acquisitions committee.

“We are thrilled to have a distinguished industry veteran such as Pamela Craig join the VMware board of directors,” said Pat Gelsinger, the chief executive officer of VMware. “With her strong industry track record, we believe Pam will be a great addition to the VMware board to help the company move its strategic direction forward in the near and long term.”

VMware’s leadership team has gone through many changes in recent months. SAP bigwig Sanjay Poonen took over the reins of the company’s end-user computing group, Steve Herrod quit his post as CTO to join venture capital firm General Catalyst, and sales boss Mike Clayville left for Amazon. Adding insult to injury, COO Tod Nielsen resigned as well, along with cloud software chief Javier Soltero and Zimbra engineering director Kevin Henrikson.

Microsoft, VMware’s biggest rival in the hypervisor market, is also undergoing a leadership reshuffle. The software titan is currently in pursuit of a successor to outgoing CEO Steve Ballmer, who announced his resignation in a letter to employees a few weeks ago. While details are scarce, it’s widely believed that the board ousted Ballmer for his failure to capitalize on cloud computing and mobility.
