Smart glasses worthy of Levar Burton (or Superman)

This week’s SmartDevice roundup features a pair of smart glasses, a smart tracker, and a badge that makes you feel like you’re part of the Star Trek crew.

ION Glasses

This gadget allows you to monitor your phone’s activity without obstructing your view as it sends you notifications via LED that only you can see.  You can assign LED colors for different notifications such as incoming calls, SMS, email, reminders, plus the ION logo on the outside of the frame can also be customized with any color your like.

All the components are on the right temple of the frame of the ION Glasses, including a Bluetooth 4.0 chip to connect to your device, a microUSB port for charging, a battery that last 3-10 days depending on usage, two buttons that can be used to perform remote actions such as taking photos, and you can use the device to locate your phone, or your phone or tablet to locate the glasses.

Though this is an Indiegogo project, even if it does not reach its $60,000 funding goal, the creators of ION Glasses will still push through with the project and deliver the devices to early supporters by February 2014.  Completing the funding goal will just ensure that the device will go to production much faster.

Gecko

Most trackers only do one thing — track your things.  What makes Gecko different from other trackers is that it not only help you find your lost things, but it also helps you protect your home, valuables, and even control things around you.

Gecko uses Bluetooth Low Energy to connect to your device, and comes with LED indicators, a buzzer for audible alerts, an accelerometer for motion detection, and a removable coin cell battery with an average battery life of about one year.

You can place Gecko on: doors and windows and get notified when they’re opened; on your purse or luggage so you’ll know if someone moves it or even track it when its get stolen using the Gecko community; your phone or DSLR so you can take photos using hand gestures; your pet so you can track your pet’s where abouts; or place it on a pill box to monitor if your loved one is taking medications on schedule.

XOWi

Use voice control without having to touch your phone to activate it, by using XOWi (pronounced like Zoe).  This little device gets activated with a simple push of a button, then just say what you want, and it will do it for you.  You can use it to get traffic information, play music, call someone, turn on lights, read new messages, and a lot of other activities.  It has a built-in microphone and speakers, as well as a 3.5mm jack for your headphones, Bluetooth 4.0 to connect with your smartphone, light and vibrate notifications, volume control buttons, accelerometer, USB 2.0 for charging, and can be worn as a clip-on, necklace, or even put it on various gadgets.

The beauty of XOWi is that you don’t have to disrupt your activities to use it.  You don’t need to swipe or tap on anything, or look at the screen, to get the information you want.  Just push that button, much like the Star Trek communicator, and give your commands.

It still has 21 days to complete its funding goal of $100,000.
