Partners make AWS more transparent, Big Data friendly @ re:Invent

There’s been no lack of excitement at Amazon’s re:Invent conference this week, with the IaaS titan announcing two new services for streaming apps and desktops from the cloud. Further fueling the buzz, the company pulled back the curtains on CloudTrail, a free tool that lets customers track API calls to their AWS deployments.

CloudTrail aims to provide deeper insight into resource usage and configuration changes, but it delivers this information in the form of JSON files that can become too cumbersome to analyze for large organizations with hundreds and potentially thousands of end-users. Luckily for corporate IT departments, a firm called Boundary is rolling out a complementary analytics service that crunches CloudTrail data to simplify troubleshooting and security analysis at scale.

The newly unveiled IT Operations Management dashboard correlates API calls with EC2 event data collected through AWS OpsWork to contextualize issues and make it easier for admins to identify the root cause behind configuration bugs and other problems, according to the startup. The solution is available for no charge to both new and existing Boundary customers.

Upping the ante, Loggly integrated CloudTrail with its own monitoring service to give users “faster and deeper insight into potential cloud-application security, compliance and performance issues.” Unlike Boundary’s offering, the feature does require a subscription.

Machine data analytics giant Splunk is also getting in on the action with the latest release of its Splunk App for Amazon Web Services, which provides enterprises with “critical visibility” into their cloud applications. The service is available alongside new AMI templates that make it easier for admins to deploy Splunk Enterprise 6 and Hunk on EC2.

Finally, open BI provider Jaspersoft is rolling out its flagship platform for AWS. The company claims that its software can help customers slash licensing costs associated with their Big Data projects by up to two thirds.
