PS4 launch in the US leaves PSN partially paralyzed, Sony promises improvement

PlayStation 4 arrives in the US and instantly becomes the desire of thousands of players. Sony announced that that it has sold over 1 million consoles in just 24 hours. If this momentum keeps up after launch, Sony will meet its year-end goal of three million units sold worldwide. The first buyers already have the machine at home and are experiencing some problems with network connectivity to PlayStation Network.

PS4 users have taken to PlayStation’s Facebook page, the official PS4 and PSN forums, Twitter and more, to share their PSN issues. Sony has noted a “very high volume” of traffic on the PlayStation Network, as owners of the new console sign in to the service to install the PlayStation 4’s day one update. Sony is aware that some users are having issues connecting to the PlayStation Network, but hasn’t given any definite date on when the troubles might clear up.

“The PlayStation Network is currently experiencing extremely high volume, some gamers may experience some difficulty connecting. We ask for your patience,” Sony says in a statement on the PlayStation Support site.

Sony has release the day one update to the console, adding number of new features including support for USB headsets, playback of Blu-ray and DVD discs, remote play, opportunities for a second screen, gameplay uploads, streaming gameplay, face detection and log on with different users. The update has a size of 300MB and may be partly responsible for the problems. In addition, it is possible that many players’ trying to download games from the PSN, which often have sizes of tens of gigabytes.

A message on the PS4 support forums acknowledges two specific error codes affecting PSN logins. Sony users are reporting error codes E-80E80034 and NW-31453-6 while attempting to login to PSN.

As such, all you can do is wait until the issue has been resolved, and keep checking the status of PSN via the PlayStation Blog or use the FAQ provided by Sony to try and resolve by yourself.

List of other issues

Meanwhile, Sony has also responded to scattered reports that pre-launch hardware provided to some users have some issues. IGN reported several users reported that the console is either bricked when they arrived or developed a fault that stopped them from displaying correctly. The faulty part is the HDMI jack.

“The issue is less than 0.4% of shipped units to date that have had hardware issues, well within the company’s expectations,” Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida tweeted regarding the hardware failure reports. “Be assured we are investigating reported PS4 issues. The number is very small compared to shipped, we believe they are isolated incidents.”

One of the most common issue appears to be a blue pulsing light, signaling that the console is failing to boot all the way. PS4 users already termed the issue as The “Red Line of Death” and the “Blue Light of Death,” so-called after the “Red Ring of Death” that plagued early owners of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console. According to the Sony support page, the associated problems include no video or audio output or consoles powering down after the system’s light blinks blue. The page posted a troubleshooting guide for PS4 owners and recommends turning off the PS4 completely and holding the power button for at least seven seconds, disconnecting the system’s AC power cord or checking for visibly damaged parts.

Some users receive the error “cannot launch application (CE-32958-7)” if they attempting to launch an application which has not yet benefited from the latest firmware update. Electronic Arts has put out a sweeping statement that EA titles are crashing or freezing due to connection issue on Sony’s firmware 1.5 update. The issue is also spreading to Battlefield 4, FIFA 14 and other big titles.

“Sony has released a firmware update for the PlayStation 4 that is required for many features on the console. However, this update also results in stability issues while playing games on the system,” EA said in a statement. “This affects all games on the PS4, including EA titles, causing crashing/freezing and non-responsive connections between the player’s console and their TV Screen.”

Another firmware-related issue – some other users reported Error: SU-30645-8 when installing update 1.50. After a successful download, users report that when installing the file the process ceases and the above error is displayed. Sony said users need to ensure they have the correct firmware installed as per their region.
