IBM’s James Kobielus on analytics and the Internet of Things | #IBMIoD
James Kobielus, a former analyst turned IBM Big Data evangelist, dropped by theCUBE at Information on Demand 2013 to share his unique insight into how analytics and the Internet of Things are reshaping user experience.
Over the past decade, the digital tide wave has disrupted entire industries while making social media a fixture of modern life, Kobielus observes. Somewhere along the way, Big Data became fundamental to driving business value and engagement. Now, next generation analytics technologies are gaining steam as more end-users demand self-service functionality, real time access to information, and a seamless experience across multiple platforms, he continues.
This shift in consumer expectations coincides with the rise of the Internet of Things, a rapidly growing trend that is extending the personal data ecosystem beyond mobile to wearable gadgets and smart homes.
“The user knows that increasingly, whatever physical environments they’re in are being – obviously there are privacy implications – are being monitored, and tracked, and optimized to meet their requirements to some degree,” Kobielus says. “User experience is not just me interacting with devices, but me simply moving through environments that are continuously optimized to my needs.”
Augmented reality will also play an important role in the Internet of Things, he explains, by overlaying new sources of personalized content within the user’s field of view. Where does Big Data fit into this new paradigm? Kobielus says that the next wave of connected devices will generate and consume information through analytics “pipeline” that will expand with the ecosystem.
