WANdisco, a UK-based provider of high availability software, announced this morning that its Non-Stop Hadoop solution has been certified to run on top of Cloudera’s leading CDH4 distribution. The news comes three months after Yahoo spinoff Hortonworks added support for the software to its rivaling analytics platform.
“With this announcement, WANdisco has solidified partnerships with the two leading Hadoop distribution vendors – Hortonworks and now Cloudera,” commented Wikibon Analyst Jeff Kelly. “WANdisco’s non-stop namenode across the WAN enables both HDP and CDH users to ensure continuous availability across geographically dispersed Hadoop deployments. This capability is becoming increasingly important as Hadoop deployments mature and expand at large, multi-national enterprises.”
Non-Stop Hadoop, which is also integrates with Cloudera Manager to simplify provisioning in globally distributed clusters, is based on WANdisco’s patented active-active replication technology. The offering employs multiple continuously synchronized metadata servers to prevent data loss and split brain scenarios in the event of an outage.
WANdisco is filling an important gap in Big Data as both enterprises and technology vendors look to make Hadoop more reliable at scale. Signaling growing interest, a British carrier described as “one of the biggest in the world” implemented Non-Stop in its environment earlier this year. The company announced the deal after reporting a 96 percent booking increase in the first quarter of 2013 to just over $3 million, up from $1.545 million 12 months earlier. Annualized renewal rates surged 134 percent with “significant growth” in several existing customer accounts including Home Depot, Nokia, John Deere and McAfee.
A few months later, Dell certified Non-Stop for integration and interoperability with PowerEdge servers, making it more accessible for customers running massively distributed data storage environments and business analytics workloads.
