The Ops revolution is the “real” change in SDN : Cloud first | #ONS2014

john furrier“Change is the word that I come out with for this show,” Stu Miniman said in his and John Furrier’s wrap up of theCUBE’s live coverage of the Open Networking Summit 2014. “Open source is a big catalyst for it.”

Looking back on the history of networking, its evolution was measured in decades. “We really see this cycle compressing,” Miniman went on. “By next year, maturity will be even more.” He also predicted there would be great changes in the industry in the next two to three years.

Disruptive trends in networking

 .

“DevOps is directly on a collision course with networking,” Furrier added. “Internet of Things is certainly going to change the dynamics.” At the same time, attendees are looking for business value, dynamic networking, the ability of networking platforms to be responsive.

Cisco stated most of the networking projects are not really done. “Is an open source project ever done?” Miniman asked. “It’s a sort of gradual maturity. Customers buy their networking based on fear.”

The big companies that build their business around networking, however, have figured the new trends out, they are working with these new technologies. “Cloud-first is leading this trend. People have to get on board,” or find a way to compete with them, thinks Miniman.

The Ops revolution, John Furrier said, is “the real revolution” around operations. At the same time, the Internet of Things brings a device centric approach.”

Cisco is talking about a developer community outside of Cisco, which is extremely interesting. Microsoft is taking a similar approach, as Cisco sees it has to move up the stack. Commenting on vendor attendance, Furrier said “the absence of Juniper is clear, HP is mute.”

  • Call to action

“Core networking used to be really boring,” Miniman said. There was one vendor, nothing really happened four years ago, it was really dull. “Today there’s exciting places, there’s lots of new job opportunities, there are ways to add value to your business.” If you can’t take advantage of those changes, you may be out of a job in a few years, Miniman explained.

Furrier said it was easy to notice progress, new technologies and trends moving to reality, the industry is moving. The show is a call for action – get together and power the cloud. “The data center networking platform is here, so is the software defined data center.”

“Networking is moving outside of the silo,” Miniman added. “This is probably the best SDN show.”
