Lightweight Linux distro CoreOS gets production-ready

coreosDevelopers of the stripped-down CoreOS Linux distro have delivered its first ever production-ready release with version 367.1.0 of the platform.

CoreOS is a radical departure from other popular Linux distributions. Designed to be extremely lightweight, each version ships as a single unit, rather than as a collection of add-on packages.

As a result, CoreOS takes up about 40 percent less RAM than other Linux distros, which is appealing to those running large-scale data centers and cloud environments. Another feature is containerization: All apps are installed as Docker containers, which isolates them from each other while still sharing system resources. This makes CoreOS more stable and easier to manage, claim its developers.

The new production-ready version 367.1.0 is built on the Linux kernel version 3.15.3, and version 1.0.1 of Docker. It’s the first version of CoreOS to make it from beta to stable release.

“This version is the most tested, secure and reliable version available for users wanting to run CoreOS,” wrote CoreOS CEO Alex Polvi in a blog post last week. However, prospective users might want to note that neither fleet nor etcd configuration tools are ‘stable’ in this current release. Those updates are yet to come.

Those wanting to download CoreOS 367.1.0 can do so from the automated script hosted at CoreOS’s GitHub repository. Choices include the Stable channel, and the Alpha and Beta channels which might be a bit buggy but which come with all the latest features.

Support is offered via the CoreOS Managed Linux program that was launched last month.
