Android takes a bite out of iOS enterprise share, Windows stagnates

Android eyesApple’s operating system for its mobile products lost 5 percent of its enterprise market share in Q2, primarily due to Android. Meanwhile, Windows Phone activations remained stagnant at 1 percent, according to Good Technology’s semi-annual Mobility Index Report.

Apple iOS accounted for 67 percent of Q2 enterprise mobile activations in 2014, while Android accounted for 32 percent. Good Technology does not have access to BlackBerry’s data, so those activations were not included. It should also be noted that Android has the distinct advantage of having multiple mobile manufacturers and carriers using its OS, while only Apple sells iOS products.

Android also gained 4 percentage points specifically in the smartphone activation category, and while iOS still maintained its commanding lead in tablet activations, it still saw a slight decrease in market share. iOS smartphone activations continued steadily with 51 percent of the total.

The gradual change in enterprise may also be reflective of the changes in consumer markets, as Android continues to gain ground. According to comScore, Android leads all smartphone operating systems overall with 52.5 percent of the market share, while Apple came in second with 41.6 percent. With many enterprises adopting bring your own device (BYOD) policies, companies may see more of those Android devices in the hands of employees.
