EMC unveils RecoverPoint for VMs: Data protection as a service for hybrid cloud | #VMworld 2014

cloud_computing_2014_0007Aiming to redefine hybrid cloud data protection, IT storage solution provider EMC Corp. today announced RecoverPoint for Virtual Machines (VMs), a data backup and recovery solution for applications in VMware-based cloud environments. The announcement was made at VMware, Inc.’s VMworld 2014 conference in San Francisco this week.

As today’s organizations move toward the hybrid cloud and software-defined data centers, virtualization administrators (vAdmins) need to update their data protection policies. Now, vAdmins can set their data protection policies at the same time they provision their new applications by using EMC’s RecoverPoint for VMs, a fully virtualized, hypervisor-based replication and automated Disaster Recovery (DR) product that is integrated into VMware’s cloud management software.

The newest member of EMC’s RecoverPoint family of products, RecoverPoint for VMs aims to reduce the time, complexity and resources required for both operational and disaster recovery processes. The software provides vAdmins with local and remote replication with continuous data protection for per-VM recovery to any point in time, with built-in automated DR orchestration.

The vision of this product is really going towards data protection as a service for hybrid cloud. And we are empowering… application owners with application recoverability and accessibility,” Jean Banko, director of product marketing for EMC’s Data Protection and Availability division, told SiliconANGLE. “We’re giving them that visibility and control to set protection policies at the same time that they’re provisioning new applications and services.”

RecoverPoint for VMs can be installed on existing ESXi servers, allowing replication and recovery at the VM level. RecoverPoint for VMs is storage-agnostic, enabling replication of VMs to and from any storage device certified by VMware.

RecoverPoint for VMs allow vAdmins to protect and recover their VMs. vAdmins can establish and manage VM-level replication quickly using the replication configuration wizard in the vSphere Web Client.

Enhanced DR readiness

.

With RecoverPoint for VMs, vAdmins can conduct automated DR orchestration tasks (for single VMs or up to an entire site) from within the RecoverPoint for VMs vCenter plug-in. Automated DR workflows include recovery from logical corruption to any point, failover and failback of specific consistency groups to any point, and non-disruptive DR testing.

RecoverPoint for VMs delivers compression, deduplication and advanced bandwidth reduction to decrease Wide Area Network (WAN) consumption by up to 90 percent, the company claimed, adding that this can result in dramatic data communication cost savings.

.

Availability

.

RecoverPoint for VMs will be generally available in early October. However, beginning in September, EMC said customers will be able to work with their preferred resellers to deploy RecoverPoint for VMs as part of an EMC VSPEX Proven Infrastructure.
