Docker’s explosive expansion fueled by $40M Series C funding round
Docker, Inc. announced today that it partnered with Sequoia and raised $40 million in Series C funding. The company is behind the Docker platform, a virtual containerization system that is rapidly growing in popularity. There have now been 21 million downloads of the Docker platform, up from just 3 million in June.
With Docker’s accelerating popularity, the platform has seen multiple improvements in the past months. Late July saw Docker, Inc. acquire Orchard Laboratories, Ltd. to enhance orchestration and application composition services. The platform has also seen rapid growth with big actors in the cloud ecosystem such as Amazon, Google, IBM, Microsoft, Red Hat and VMware. Docker CEO Ben Golub spoke at length at the VMworld conference about how virtual containers fit into the technology landscape with cloud and virtualization.
Numerous companies have climbed on board, with Docker’s partner ecosystem now numbering more than 100 companies and 13,000 Docker-related projects launched on GitHub. There are also more than 35,000 “Dockerized” applications available on the Docker Hub Registry, promising that if Docker can be applied to a solution, it soon will be.
Development and DevOps enhanced with Docker adoption
Enterprise developers say the ability to rapidly spin up Docker containers cuts deployment delays. Docker says companies that have implemented the platform have seen up to a ten-times reduction in cycle time. “Docker helps us keep services isolated and simplifies our continuous delivery pipeline. That encourages innovation and experimentation across all of our teams,” says Michael Bryzek, Gilt Groupe, CTO and founder.
Companies that have adopted Docker for web-scale support include Baidu, Cambridge Healthcare, eBay, Gilt, Groupon and Yandex. Spotify reported a fourfold increase in productivity after implementing Docker 1.0 for development and deployment by its application team.
And, in the DevOps community, solutions have been built to tie both automation and last-mile configuration to Docker containers with projects such as Chef’s Knife plugin. Puppet Labs released information on how to orchestrate configuration with Docker containers during DockerCon in June. And Anisble supports deployment and installation of Docker modules.
