Bitcoin thrives at #CES2015 as Bitstamp is a no show

bitcoin anonymityThe Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is highlighting the best of Bitcoin this week, although there’s one notable absence: Bitstamp Ltd.

The World of Bitcoin display features a 2,000-square-foot island and includes Bitcoin-related companies including BitPay Inc., Circle Inc., Payword Inc. (Kraken,) Robocoin Technologies LLC, BTC Media Inc. (yBitcoin,) and others. The companies collectively represent over $100 million in venture capital funding.

Highlights of the displays include the ability to purchase bitcoin, a demonstration of mining hardware, the ability to set up a bitcoin exchange account, and education in regards to online security.

CES News

Coin Cloud is presenting their new Bitcoin ATM at a launch party at the Gold Spike Hotel & Casino January 9th.

The company is reported to be targeting casinos, malls and tourist destinations with the new machine. Coin Cloud boasts that they’re able to make travel easy for bitcoin users.

On the floor of CES at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Bitcoin ATMs were made available in the South Hall from Robocoin Bitcoin for attendees to top up or withdraw cash from their Bitcoin wallets.

The Circle stand was reported to be well attended, although they were paying for the attention: people who signed up for an account with them received $5 worth of Bitcoin for free.

In other new releases, BitPay debuted a new version of its CoPay Bitcoin wallet for Windows Mobile.

First released in 2014, CoPay is an open source multi-signature Bitcoin wallet platform, and the company claims the new app “demonstrates the power and capabilities of the platform.”

Craigslist for Bitcoin

Gliph Inc. has announced Gliph Marketplace, which is billed as a new way to buy and sell locally using cash and Bitcoin.

A feature of the new marketplace is a P2P transaction experience the company has dubbed “deal flow.” The feature is said to help you stay focused on completing a deal by “integrating messaging and useful push notifications into the buying and selling experience.” Deal flow also offers intuitive listing status updates and “earns you money faster” by making digital payments an integrated part of the experience.

The app is available on Android and mobile web, with a iPhone version currently in the works.

Bitstamp MIA

Speculation that Bitstamp is Mt. Gox 2.0 has increasing with the crisis ridden company failing to attend CES, despite having paid for and booked a stand.

The company is reported to have lost $5 million in Bitcoin since it was allegedly hacked January 5th.

At the time of writing, the Bitstamp site remains completely down with Bitstamp claiming that until such time they’ve sorted out the security issues it will not be returning… a similar line taken by Mt. Gox in its final days.
