Just how big did Docker become in the last year?
San Francisco-based startup Docker, which offers an open-source technology that packages applications into movable containers, had a stunning year in 2014. It’s arguably the hottest startup in enterprise tech right now, with Silicon Valley giants like IBM and Microsoft just some of the names that’ve chosen to ally with its technology. Developers have been equally enthusiastic too, while Docker itself closed not one, but two rounds of funding in the last 12 months.
Coming off such a succesful year, WaveMaker, which builds a Docker-based software platform for simplifying and optimizing Docker on public and private infrastructures, has produced the following infographic, which outlines all of the partnerships, releases, announcements and competition related to the Docker ecosystem over the last, action-packed year – and what a year it was!
Docker’s unparalleled growth trajectory went into overdrive with the release of Docker 1.0 at the first DockerCon event on June 9. That event, themed as the “march towards 1.0” saw the Docker craze gain even more platform support and add to its expanding list of partners, with the likes of AWS, Canonical, CloudCredo Deis, Google and Red Hat all jumping on the bandwagon.
Post DockerCon and the excitement continued to pick up pace. Docker made a couple of timely acquisitions before surprising everyone by teaming up with virtualization giant VMware to make it easier than ever for enterprises to run and manage container based apps. Of course, all of this success didn’t go unnoticed, and a number of rivals to Docker’s technology sprung up through the course of the year, including Canonical and CoreOS with their own, alternative container technologies.
