#Want: LapExpand offers brilliant, portable multiple displays for laptops

lapexpand1If you use a laptop you know one basic limitation: screen size. Sure you can live with it but what if you could add one or two portable, lightweight foldable monitors to your laptop ,which you can easily deploy when you’re on the go?

Meet LapExpand, brilliant portable multiple displays for laptops.

LapExpand is described by the company as “a portable adapter for laptop computers which includes one or two extra monitors.” The design is focused on being light and thin (1.5-2 pounds depending on configurations, less than 1 inch thick for a 17-inch display) and they fold onto your laptop when not in use, making it easy to store with your laptop in a backpack or carrying case.

The system offers internal batteries that are claimed to last up to five hours if using the two monitors, and 10 hours is you use just one of them. It’s not clear from the product page how they’re charged, but it’s possibly via USB.

The setup includes a self-stand mechanism to hold it along with your laptop, lateral adjustable doors which allow you to adjust both monitors, and a protective case ensures the durability of the product.

lapexpand2LapExpand is connected to your computer via HDMI and VGA ports, models are available for 17, 15 and 14-inch laptop computers (not 13-inch at this stage), and the screens offered in 1080HD resolution and are PC- and Mac-compatible.

The product pitch notes that the technology such as displays, connectors and batteries are already available on the market, so having the idea built won’t be difficult.

This isn’t the first time portable monitors for laptops have come to market; the ASUS MB168B and AOC E1659F are two more recent offerings, but where those are more like oversized standalone tablets, the genius of the LapExpand system is that the monitor, or monitors attach to your laptop and become a true extension of it. The LapExpand offering is also lighter and thinner as well.

There are some criticisms of LapExpand; for one, the system doesn’t come in a 13-inch configuration, which is a popular size for laptops. Secondly, while the founder claims to have “proven experience in manufacturing and engineering…[with] companies like Nemak, Reis Robotics, Schneider Electric, Aztek Global Ventures and National Instruments,” no proof is given, and the links to the website for the company allegedly behind it is currently under construction. No matter how great the idea, the lack of company details doesn’t instil confidence.

Putting those points aside though, if the LapExpand is legit and they deliver, there’s no reason why this wouldn’t quickly become an extremely popular, in-demand product.

Cost wise it’s eminently affordable: on pre-sale the single monitor is $149/$199 for the 14-15-inch/17-inch versions, and the two monitors are $299/$349.

LapExpand is new to Indiegogo today as is looking to raise $50,000 in 60 days. Shipping, if the crowd funding is successful, is expected November 2015.
