Yesterday BlackBerry rolled out a major software update, giving BlackBerry users on BlackBerry 10 devices such as the Q5, Q10, Z3, Z10, and Z30 access to over 200,000 Android apps as well as features such as Blend and a Siri-like competitor called Assistant.
The update, BlackBerry OS 10.3.1, now allows users to access both the BlackBerry World appstore and the Amazon appstore that opens up around 240,000 Android apps that were previously only available to users with the BlackBerry Passport and Classic.
BlackBerry signed a licensing agreement with Amazon last June to bring the Amazon appstore to BlackBerry handsets and subsequently made it available as part of the BlackBerry 10.3 update and pre-installed on the Passport and Classic models.
With the addition of the Amazon appstore, BlackBerry users will finally have access to apps and games like Minecraft – Pocket Edition, Pinterest, Kindle, Amazon Shopping and Candy Crush Saga.
In addition to Android apps, users on the latest update will also enjoy a number of BlackBerry’s latest software features, including Blend and Assistant.
BlackBerry Blend, unveiled last year, syncs messaging and content between a user’s BlackBerry, computer and tablet. Compatible with Mac OS, Windows, iOS and Android, users can get message notifications, read and respond to messages as well as access documents, calendars, contacts and other media across devices.
BlackBerry Assistant, similar to Apple’s Siri and Samsung’s S Voice, is a digital assistant that allows users to use simple voice or text commands to manage email, contacts, calendars and other applications.
The update also touts improved battery life, claiming users can boost battery life by as much as 15 percent. The Power Saving Profile lets users pick applications to restrict or keep active to optimize power usage.
Changes to the camera software deliver automatic recommendations for the best mode and settings to ensure users get the best possible picture. Users can now also record video and take pictures at the same time.
Handset owners will be notified of the update in the BlackBerry Hub; however, BlackBerry has cautioned that the actual release timing will vary by carrier.
