Silver Spring chosen for ‘Bristol is Open’ smart city program

The Bristol City Council and the University of Bristol in the U.K. launched ‘Bristol is Open,’ a smart city program, and have chosen Silver Spring Networks, Inc. to deploy its standards-based IPv6 wireless network across the city to connect a variety of sensors and ultimately creating a ‘living innovation lab.’

Silver Spring will also connect existing city assets, such as street lights, in the Brunel Mile and other centrally located areas to allow Bristol to rapidly demonstrate the economic and energy benefits of intelligent street lighting. The network canopy can also be utilized for other smart city implementations such as parking meters, traffic light and congestion sensors, safety cameras, air quality sensors, weather sensors, public transportation sensors, remote personal healthcare monitors and acoustic detection.

The resulting sensor data and insights to prototype new smart city applications and services will be available for qualified start-up businesses, entrepreneurs and academic institutions.

Carnegie Mellon to save $2M in utilities from IBM partnership

In partnership with IBM, Carnegie Mellon University will be installing the new  IBM Building Management Center in 36 of its facilities on its Pittsburgh campus which is delivered on the IBM SoftLayer cloud. Carnegie is the first higher education institution to utilize IBM’s cloud-based analytics system to monitor thousands of data points from building automation and control systems and will also be able to detect system problems and trigger corrective actions to reduce energy and facility operating costs. Carnegie expects to save as much as 10 percent or $2 million annually on utility costs.

“On its own, the deployment of this technology will drive significant energy and operational savings with a very attractive return on investment. Just as important, improved building performance enhances the occupant experience and provides a much more effective education and research environment,” said Donald Coffelt, associate vice president for Carnegie Mellon’s Facilities Management Services, in a prepared statement. “This technology offers us important gains in initiatives related to advanced infrastructure systems research, the Pittsburgh 2030 initiative and a more proactive building and infrastructure management model.”
