Must-know facts about Trio
To end the day with a smile on my face, I often find myself browsing the web for funny, cute or adorable dog and cat GIFs, videos or photos. But I’m far to lazy to make these amusing media clips for myself. A new app called Trio could change my ways.
Earlier this month Trio launched on the Apple App Store that is unlike any other app. While there are countless video and photo editing apps available for both Android and iOS devices, not many let you fuse photos, videos, music and GIFs into a masterpiece. Until Trio.
So what is Trio? It’s described as a media mashup app that allows you to share your creations with your friends. With Trio, you can show your funny, creative or playful side or have fun with your friends in brainstorming a creation to share with the world.
But the big question is: How easy is it to use Trio? Is creating a Trio mashup as quick as a few seconds? Or will you end up frustrated and eventually give up on your dream of creating the first viral Trio mashup?
What you need to know
It’s free
Trio is a free app that you can get on the Apple App Store. No news yet if an Android version of the app will be coming out soon. The file is about 22.9MB and requires that your device is running iOS 7 or later. Download time will depend on how fast your Internet speed is. In my case, the app finished downloading in less than a minute.
You need to sign up
When you first launch the Trio app, you will be asked to sign up using either your Facebook account or email account. For this app, I chose to use my Facebook account, and by giving Trio permission, it will have access to my public profile, friends list and my email address.
Choose your username
After signing up, you then have to set your username. Trio automatically suggests a username based on your Facebook profile or email address used to set up the account, but you can always change that to anything you want, as long as the name is not yet taken.
Quick tutorial
The app will then show you a quick overview of Trio and then ask if it can send you notifications, such as when someone likes the stuff you create or when someone is trying reach you. It will then show you a quick tutorial as to how Trio works, and you can view what others have created by swiping left or right on your screen and also vote on whether you like it or not — if you feel like voting.

How to create a Trio
To create a Trio, just tap on the plus button at the bottom center of your screen. You will then have to choose which media you want to start with: photo, video or GIF. When you choose photo, you will then be presented with four choices: Instagram, image search, camera roll and take a photo. I used image search to look for photos of cute puppies. You can only use 12 photos at a time, and if you consume all of it, you won’t be able to add a video or GIF to your creation. You can place a text on the image, choose a font and color, use a voice recording and set how long each image will be shown. Then you can choose a song that you think would go well with what you are creating. The, if you are satisfied with your creation, you can post it for others to see.
If you want to use all three types of media in your Trio, you need to first choose whether you want to start with a photo, video or GIF. Start with choosing one photo, video or GIF, and then start adding other types of media until you are satisfied or until it allows you to add photos, videos or GIFs. Before posting, you can rearrange the media, add music and preview your creation before the world gets to see it. You can add a caption or hashtag for your creation and choose whether you just want to share it on Trio, Facebook, Twitter, text, email or WhatsApp, or just save it if you’re too shy to share your creation with the world.
It’s addicting
Once you have created your first Trio, I’m pretty sure you will want to create another and experiment with the app. It’s pretty easy to use, maybe not as quick as creating one in a matter of seconds as there are a lot of options to choose from, but it is easy to use. Would I recommend Trio to my friends? Hell yeah! It’s fun and quirky and addictive … what’s not to like?
