playbulb smart garden lightsThis week’s Smart Living roundup features new partnerships for smart and secure homes, another immersive lighting experience and playful smart lights for your garden.

Playbulb garden gets stellar crowdfunding

Playbulb garden, a smart LED lighting solution that draws power from the sun, has managed to raise more than 10 times its funding goal on Kickstarter more than a week before its campaign end date.

Playbulb garden is a color-changing LED light that looks like a big hockey puck, which you can scatter in your garden to give it an interesting glow. It has a sensor that makes it automatically turn on or off when the sun sets or rises, plus a solar panel that draws energy from the sun and powers the Lithium ion battery of the device that can continuously run the device for up to 20 hours when fully charged.

Using the Playbulb X app your smartphone, you can choose from the pre-installed special effects: romantic candle effect, two disco-style rainbow effects, pulsing effect and flashing effect, to make your garden parties stand out. Playbulb garden is also waterproof so you don’t need to worry about it when it starts to rain.

SyFy and Philips’ immersive lighting experience

At this year’s SxSW festival in Austin, TX, the SyFy channel and Koninklijke Philips N.V., makers of the hue connected light bulb, announced a team up to offer a new, immersive lighting experience later this year with the series premier of “The Expanse,” a futuristic series set in space. The show utilizes a unique “light track” that uses audio cues from the show to create ambient lighting effects, such as changing colors and brightness and dimming, which can all be accessed using an app on a viewer’s smartphone.

“The footage we are seeing from ‘The Expanse’ has us incredibly excited about utilizing technology with Philips to the fullest,” Matthew Chiavelli, Syfy’s vice president of digital media and strategy, says. “Not only do we have outer space as a canvas, but the special effects and action will make this our most compelling Philips Hue experience to date.”

This will be SyFy and Philips’ third partnership. Last year, the two offered a different viewing experience when it premiered Sharknado 2 and the series 12 Monkeys.
