Instagram introduces a collage-building app called Layout

Instagram LayoutIf you were tired of people complaining about the flood of Instagram pictures using one of the app’s many different filters, get ready for a new trend to take over your Facebook and Twitter feeds. Today the Facebook Inc-owned Instagram announced a new app called Layout that will allow users to quickly generate single image collages from multiple pictures in their camera rolls.

“It’s fun, it’s simple and it gives you a new way to flex your creativity,” Instagram wrote on its blog.

Layout offers a range of custom image layouts that lets users select different amounts and sizes of pictures to be combined into a single image. The app allows you to easily  drag and drop pictures from your camera roll into the different frames, zooming or resizing them to focus on the parts you want to see. There is also a Photo Booth option that takes up to four pictures in a row and automatically stitches them together.

For users who take a large number of pictures (ie basically every Instagram user), Layout also has a tab called Faces that takes advantage of image recognition software to pick out only photos that contain people in them. This will save you the hassle of scrolling through all of those pictures of sandwiches and cats. Not that you could not also create a collage of sandwiches and cats.

Of course, no Instagram app would be complete without a few special options for people who are not satisfied with plain pictures, and Layout comes with a couple of image manipulation tools that will let you mirror images in potentially interesting ways.

Perhaps one of the most notable features of Layout is the fact that it does not require an Instagram account to use, and it offers multiple sharing options outside of Instagram or Facebook, including Tumblr, LinkedIn, Snapchat, Slack, and more. But if you do decide to share your Layout image through Instagram, you can use all of its usual filters and effects.

Layout is currently available for iOS only, but Instagram says an Android version will be available “in the coming months.”
