Microsoft ditches Xbox branding in its new music and video preview apps for Windows 10

IDS_MY_MUSIC-500x281Microsoft announced that Windows Insiders can now try music and video apps for PC, available as a download here (music) and here (Video) from the Windows Store as long as you are already part of the Windows 10 Technical Preview 10 (10049). Notably Microsoft is no longer using the Xbox name for its music and video apps, now simply going with Windows 10 Music and Video.

As far as music is concerned you can take all your songs and save them in OneDrive, including the tunes you’ve already collected with your Xbox Music Pass. You can then make playlists, filter songs, which can then be played across any of your Windows devices, or through music.xbox.com. If you’re looking to discover new music try one of the radio stations based on your musical preferences, or with an Xbox Music Pass browse catalogues and stream tunes. Microsoft says it’s currently working on some improvements including: right-click context menus, better app navigation, new themes, a compact mode, settings improvements and better accessibility.

On the Microsoft website the company stated, “ All your tunes, all in one place, on all your devices The Music Preview app brings you all the music you love in one simple, fast and elegant app on Windows. Play and manage music from your personal collection and access it all across your favourite Windows device.”

Windows 10 Video will play all the movies and TV shows you’ve collected, including MKV files. The app can stream videos that you’ve bought from Xbox Video, or you play your movies and TV from local sources. Microsoft is presently working on a new video store in which you’ll be able to stream videos and also play them while you’re offline.

As with all previews there are blips and features that need working on. Microsoft has listed all of these on its website.
