MIT’s McAfee: Second machine age will be ‘much bigger than the Net’

theCUBE, SiliconANGLE’s premiere video production, was at the MIT IDE 2015 held in London and the hosts had a chance to interview Andrew McAfee, the co-founder of MIT’s Initiative on the Digital Economy and co-author with MIT Sloan School of Management Prof. Erik Brynjolfsson of the of The Second Machine Age, Work, Progress, and Prosperity in a Time of Brilliant Technologies. McAfee mentioned in the interview that the Second Machine Age is much bigger than the Internet revolution, as it includes artificial intelligence, robotics, the Internet of Things and more.

Amazon, Belgian grocer launch connected kitchens with voice-control shopping

Amazon and Carrefour Belgium announced similar products to enable consumers to shop directly from their kitchens. The devices allow shoppers to scan items from their homes and order them online for delivery right to their doorsteps, saving time and sometimes money.

Also featured in this roundup is the Philips Hue Go, a portable smart light and the Meld Knob + Clip which turns your conventional stove and old cookware into smart devices.

DJI’s new Phantom 3 drone offers live streaming, 4k video support

DJI has released the new Phantom 3 drone which is offered in two models: Professional which is priced at $1,250 and Advanced which is priced at $999. The drones offer live streaming directly to YouTube, a downward-facing camera that powers its visual positioning system even without a GPS signal, and added support for GLONASS.  The difference between the two models is that the Professional model offers 4k video, while the Advanced model offers 1080p.

Smart World Problems: When the concept is better than the product

Internet-connected devices may offer convenience for consumers but they are not flawless and may sometimes offer more trouble than they’re worth. Smart appliances are being launched left and right on crowdfunding sites as well as from major brands but the problems is, the availability of many of these products can be limited and the matter of software compatibility has yet to be addressed for long term use. Another problem the connected world faces is the abundance of hackers who may want to get inside your smart homes or smart cars.

Free smart glass SDK and more

Mozaiq operations GmbH, a new joint venture from ABB, Robert Bosch GmbH and Cisco System Inc., aims to create and operate a unifying platform for the connected home which would allow consumers to choose from various connected devices offered by different brands and have them communicate with one another seamlessly.

Also featured in this roundup is Acer Inc.’s partnership with AppWorks Ventures to find the next big IoT innovator, and the Jins Meme smart glass SDK is now available to developers for free.
