Uber’s poised to muscle in on the delivery business

13821005894_7645b0eba8Not satisfied with upsetting every single cab driver on the face of the planet, Uber Inc. is setting out to do the same thing with delivery guys, with a new service to ship products from numerous well known merchants.

This wouldn’t be the first time Uber has dabbled in deliveries. It’s been using its network of cars and drivers to do just that on an experimental basis for quite a while – its popular food delivery service UberEATS is the best example, and others includes its less well known household goods delivery service UberESSENTIALS, and its courier service UberRUSH.

According to TechCrunch, these efforts are just a prelude to a much bigger play by Uber, which now plans to rival Amazon Prime with a nationwide delivery service driving goods door-to-door from over 40 merchants, including brands like Neiman Marcus, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany’s, Cohen’s Fashion Optical and Hugo Boss.

TechCrunch gained access to leaked documents from Uber, which show the company is readying for an imminent launch of its merchat delivery program. As well as the above merchants, Uber is also reportedly working with the Spring mobile shopping app, delivering goods from a limited number of brands, such as Bing Bang Jewelry, Phyllis + Rosie, Mack Weldon, Jinsoon, Industry Standard, Outdoor Voices and Negative Underwear.

When asked to comment, an Uber spokesperson made out that the program was an extension of the company’s UberRUSH service.

“Experimenting and finding new, creative ways for the Uber app to provide even greater value to our riders and driver partners is a way of life at Uber,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “We have been piloting UberRUSH with multiple retailers for the last year.”

However, TechCrunch believes this is more than just an experiment. It says the company has even built a brand new app just for the service, which is focused soley on merchant deliveries. The app will be used by drivers to take orders, just as they use the standard app to pick up passengers.

“Eventually, however, Uber drivers will be able to take both human passengers and Uber Merchant orders at the same time through an intelligent routing system, all from a single driver-side app,” TechCrunch wrote.

Uber is entering the delivery market at a time when things are really heating up. Just last week, delivery startup Postmates Inc. signed a deal with Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc., while Uber competitor Sidecar Technologies, Inc. has been delivering packages and food within the San Francisco area for some time already.

But Uber entering the game is a much, much bigger deal. With all of its cars, drivers and infrastructure already in place in countless cities around the world, the company looks poised to corner the market even before its begun.
