A report released Monday indicates that Apple continued to dominate in the mobile enterprise space during the first quarter (Q1) of 2015, with the company’s iOS mobile operating system accounting for nearly three-quarters of mobile activations. iOS devices made up 72 percent of global device activations in the enterprise in Q1 2015 – largely due to continued popularity of the iPhone 6 – while Android devices accounted for 26 percent.
The latest figures come from Good Technology Corp.’s quarterly Mobility Index Report (PDF download), and, compared to the figures released for the fourth quarter of 2014, iOS lost one percent share of mobile device activations while Android gained one percent.
Accounting for 26 percent of all mobile device activations during Q1 2015, the iPhone 6 was the most popular device in the enterprise followed by the Android-based Samsung Galaxy S5.
Combined, Apple and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. accounted for 28 of the top 30 mobile devices tracked by Good Technology.
Device activations for Windows Phone have remained unchanged from the last six quarters at one percent share.
Good Technology does not offer any insight into BlackBerry handset activations as BlackBerry Enterprise Server precludes access to this data.
iOS remained in the number one spot for tablet activations, with iPad accounting for 81 percent of all activations in the enterprise during Q1 2015. However, this is a decline of four percent over the previous quarter and nearly 14 percent over the year-ago quarter when iOS had 92 percent of the tablet share.
Android gained one percent share of tablet activations, continuing a trend that has seen its market share nearly double over the last year.
The Windows desktop operating system was included in the report for the first time this past quarter, accounting for a further one percent of device activations. The majority of these devices were tablets running Windows Pro.
Windows saw an increase in tablet activations from one percent to four percent thanks to both Microsoft Surface devices and devices from Windows OEMs.
As per the previous quarter, iOS activations were more prevalent than Android in regulated industries, such as education (83 percent), public sector (80 percent) and financial services (76 percent).
Less regulated industries seemed to be Android’s strong suit. Android increased its share in high-tech sectors to 47 percent and in energy sectors to 44 percent.
Good Technology’s figures are based on data gathered from over 6,200 organizations in 189 countries.
