Amazon launches same day delivery for the ultra lazy and impatient
Need to buy a new toothbrush but just can’t muster up the energy to make the two minute drive to the store? Well Amazon.com Inc can now be your codependent enabler.
The Seattle-based e-commerce giant, which will be having its twentieth birthday in July, has announced that its new Prime Free Same-Day Delivery program is rolling out to Amazon Prime members in 14 metropolitan areas across the country, including:
- Seattle/Tacoma
- San Francisco Bay Area
- Los Angeles
- San Diego
- Phoenix
- Dallas-Fort Worth
- Indianapolis
- Atlanta
- Tampa Bay Area
- Boston
- New York City
- Philadelphia
- Baltimore
- Washington D.C.
Amazon already offered premium one-hour and two-hour shipping for certain items in a few of these same areas, but the new same-day delivery option will target more patient consumers who are capable of withstanding an arduous wait that can take several hours. Those brave souls.
Prime currently costs $99 a year ($49 a year for students) and includes faster shipping for select items, as well as access to Amazon’s streaming video service, Prime Instant Video. So when Amazon says that same-day shipping is “free” for members, really they mean there is no additional fee.
Although, that is not entirely true either.
Unlike the standard free 2-day shipping that all Prime members receive, the new same-day delivery option is only available for orders of $35 or more. Orders under that cost of $5.99 per order for Prime members, or $9.98 or higher for non-members.
Not all Prime eligible items will be included, and items that qualify will have a new Prime FREE Same-Day logo on the store page. Obviously, only items that are stocked locally at a nearby Amazon distribution center will be available, and you have to place your order by noon to receive your items by the end of the day.
Unfortunately, simply living in one of the above regions is no guarantee that you will qualify for same-day delivery. The farther you live from your local Amazon hub, the less likely you will be able to take advantage of the new program—at least until they get that whole drone situation figured out.
If you live in one of the covered metropolitan areas, you can enter your zip code here to see if your area is eligible for same-day delivery.
