Steam now refunds game purchases within 14 days ‘for any reason’
One of the drawbacks of many digital distribution platforms is their almost complete lack of a refund policy. For many services, once a digital good is bought, there is no way to return it unless there is an issue with the distribution platform itself.
That is about to change for one of the biggest game platforms out there, as Valve Corp’s Steam Client will now offer full refunds for any reason within 14 days of the initial purchase.
“You can request a refund for nearly any purchase on Steam—for any reason,” Steam’s new refund page says. “Maybe your PC doesn’t meet the hardware requirements; maybe you bought a game by mistake; maybe you played the title for an hour and just didn’t like it. It doesn’t matter. Valve will, upon request via help.steampowered.com, issue a refund for any reason, if the request is made within fourteen days of purchase, and the title has been played for less than two hours.”
One of the few platforms that has offered digital refunds in the past is GOG.com, which allowed users to request a refund for a game within 30 days of purchase. But GOG only allows refunds “if a game that you’ve bought on GOG.com doesn’t work and our team of expert Support staff can’t solve the problem for you.”
What can be refunded?
Steam’s new policy is available for any reason, no questions asked. The only limitation is that a game cannot have been played for more than two hours. DLC is a little more complicated, as you cannot have played the base game for longer than two hours since purchasing the DLC, and the DLC cannot have been “consumed, modified or transferred.”
Pre-purchased games can be refunded at any time before launch, and the 14 day refund period begins when the game officially releases. Bundles can also be refunded as long as “none of the items in the bundle have been transferred, and if the combined usage time for all items in the bundle is less than two hours.”
You can even get a refund for the purchase of Steam Wallet funds as long as no portion of them have been used to purchase anything.
Interestingly, VAC banned players need not apply, as Valve has stated, “If you have been banned by VAC (the Valve Anti-Cheat system) on a game, you lose the right to refund that game.”
You also cannot receive a refund for games that were purchased outside of Steam, as is the case with some titles that can be purchased from a retailer and then activated on Steam. Movies and Steam Gifts are also not eligible for refunds.
