While everyone is still waiting around for the Steam Summer Sale, which supposedly starts June 11, GOG.com kicked off its own sale today with big discounts on hundreds of titles. The site has discounts on several bundles of classic games, as well as on the entire Witcher franchise (developed by GOG’s parent company) and more.
GOG is not really a direct alternative to platforms like Steam or Origin—not yet, anyway. You will not find any recent triple-A titles on GOG, but you will find hundreds of classic games dating all the way to the mid 1980s, as well as more recent games like TellTale’s Game of Thrones series.
“We’re starting with a splash and diving straight into 100+ titles on promo in twice-daily deals, deep-discount bundles, and with FREE games to unlock,” GOG wrote in a blog post announcing the sale. “With new deals appearing on the site every 12 hours, we’ll have more than 100 offers every day up to 90% off. We also have a few fun surprises in store to keep things fresh and worth the regular trip back to the summer sale!”
GOG is currently offering three free games for this sale’s participants depending on how much they spend:
While GOG does not always offer some of the top new releases, it does have an advantage over services like Steam in two main areas: compatibility and lack of DRM.
Older games can sometimes be very difficult to run on newer PCs, which is why emulation tools like DOSBox and ScummVM were created. But emulators can sometimes be finicky to configure, and not everyone has the knowledge or the patience to deal with them. GOG builds emulation into all of its older games, tweaking the settings to get them to run optimally with little hassle for the user.
All of GOG’s games also come DRM-free, meaning you can download and play your games without the headache of verification servers or always-online anti-piracy systems. Once you download a game from GOG, it is yours to do with as you please. Forever.
