Uber goes continental with UberBOAT launch in Istanbul

After succesfully tricking legions of Thai Uber-ites with the (fake) launch of its UberBoat service in Bangkok, Thailand, last April, Uber Inc., has actually launched a (real) boat service after all, dubbed “UberBOAT”.

Uber is now officially offering transportation between continents with its new service, which is being launched in Istanbul, Turkey, the so-called “Gateway to Asia”. The idea is to ferry people across the Bosphorus Strait on their daily commutes, helping to ease the heavy flow of traffic that’s become a mainstay of Istanbul’s public ferries, suspension bridges and undersea tunnels.

“Since we started our operations in Istanbul last summer, we are always hard at work to make this city more accessible by offering reliable and comfortable transport options. Today, on the day of our 1 year anniversary in this unique city that bridges two continents, we’re launching UberBOAT,” reads Uber’s blog post.

Bloomberg Business notes that Istanbul is one of the few (perhaps only) major cities in the world straddling two continents, and sees millions of people making the daily commute between Europe and Asia every day. There are currently two public ferry routes serving commuters at a cost of 2.15 lira ($0.81) for a single trip. Alternatively there are two suspension bridges over the strait, while a single underground tunnel also serves commuters, with a new bridge and tunnel currently under construction.

But Uber seems to think it has an alternative, in the form of its brand new water taxi fleet. Certainly the voyage will be more comfortable than the regular ferry, with each boat carrying just 7 to 10 passengers. However, with a one way trip starting at 50 liras ($19) a person, the service is most likely to appeal to well-to-do commuters and perhaps a few tourists.

“This is a good addition to help solve Istanbul’s traffic problems by offering transport on the Bosporus, which is obviously underutilized,” said Austin Kim, Uber’s operation manager for the area, in an interview with Bloomberg.
