PubNub nets $20 million for its cloud-based data distribution service

In addition to filtering, analyzing, visualizing and sharing it, organizations nowadays also require – perhaps above all else – the ability to move their data to where it needs to be in a timely manner, a challenge that PubNub Inc. has made a respectable business out of addressing. And that business is now set to grow even bigger thanks to $20 million in fresh funding from investors.

The cash will go towards helping to expand the adoption of its namesake data distribution service, which does exactly what the description suggests. Pushing out updates may not seem like a task for a dedicated cloud automation engine given that the likes of Apple Inc. largely take care of the  process for developers, but there’s much more to it than that.

For starters, an iOS application may also be available on Android, which is manageable when the only data that needs distributing is the occasional patch but becomes a lot less so when the clients employ, say, push notifications that need to be consistent across both platforms. Those alerts must also be delivered in the same window when time-sensitive updates like limited deals are involved, which adds latency to the equation.

The challenge is only compounded when users wish to customize the content that arrives on their devices, an increasingly widespread expectation, or integrate with connected devices such as the Apple Watch. And that’s not to mention the use cases emerging for the technology on the other side of the spectrum, in the backend of the enterprise, where whole  fleets of Internet-enabled endpoints need to communicate with one another in real-time.

That’s the opportunity that PubNub has seized with its service, which provides the management, monitoring and security features that organizations require to properly route the vast amounts of traffic crisscrossing their extended networks. The service handles the delivery through 14 data centers that the company says deliver three million messages every second with latency less than a quarter of that.

That activity is the product of some 2,000 paying customers and partners, a number that the new funding is meant to help grow. Sapphire Ventures led the round while exiting backers Relay Ventures and Scale Venture Partners took the opportunity to increase their stake in PubNub, bringing its total raised to $35.1 million.
