New for IoT builders: Cloud-based dev kit, wireless building blocks

This week’s Smart DevOps roundup features new developer kits for the Internet of Things, and a new IP-based networking protocol.

Jilia IoT Development Kit

JiliaCentraLite Systems, Inc., makers of Internet of Things (IoT) products, has launched a Kickstarter, Inc. campaign to help fund its new IoT development kit called Jilia.

Jilia is described as a single, simple API framework that will empower developers of all skill levels to build and expand the IoT. It provides a turnkey Cloud service that eliminates the need for the development of custom server software, expensive infrastructure hardware or dedicated teams for server/hosting maintenance.

“The most costly and complex step in creating IoT devices and services is building a Cloud-based infrastructure to manage, communicate and control millions of always-connected devices,” said CentraLite CTO John Calagaz. “The Jilia framework provides these features directly through its API and can scale with an organization’s needs — from a few devices to millions, making IoT a reality where it wasn’t, before.”

Jilia aims to raise at least $50,000 during the campaign period, which will be used for the large-scale production of the development kits. The kits are expected to ship by October 2015.

Sam and Map’s IoT building blocks

SAM_0012Sam Labs Ltd.’s collaboration with Map Project Office, a creative consultancy company, has resulted in the production of wireless building blocks for the Internet of Things. The Bluetooth-enabled modules comes in different kits — Explore, Learn, Make, Pro and Family — to accommodate the different needs of budding and pro developers.

The modules have two components, the sensors, which are responsible for input such as buttons and pressure sensors, and actors, which provide output such as lights and buzzers. The modules are divided into sensors and actors. Utilizing Bluetooth, data captured by sensors are transferred to the software to be interpreted and then sends instructions to the actors for the appropriate actions. The modules are designed to be completely wireless and are wrapped in an elastomer band that hides the electronic components, which can easily be removed if the user wants to tweak the module.

Sam kits are available for purchase starting at $119.

Thread Group releases Thread

Thread Group, an alliance backed by industry bigwigs such as Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., ARM Holdings plc and others, announced the release of Thread, a new IP-based wireless networking protocol designed for low-power connected products in the home.

Thread utilizes standards such as IPv6 and 6LoWPAN as its foundation and offers numerous technological advantages for product developers, such as reliable and secure networks and simple connectivity. It also requires less power to operate.

Product developers who are members of Thread Group can now access Thread technical specifications and documentation to build Thread-compliant products. Companies and developers can access Thread technical white papers and learn more at www.threadgroup.org/downloads.aspx.

Thread-compliant chips and software stacks will be available from ARM, Freescale Semiconductor, Inc. and Silicon Laboratories, Inc. to allow end-product development while the Thread product certification program will be launched in September, when testing of Thread-compliant products will begin. The Thread Group aims to have Thread-certified products to be available to consumers by late 2015.

Also announced was the joining of Qualcomm, Inc. into the Thread Group Board of Directors.
