Apple’s fall launch event slated for Sept. 9: Here’s what to expect
Last week a report surfaced claiming that Apple has scheduled its annual fall launch event for September 9, giving us less than a month to wait for the arrival of a slew of new products from the Cupertino giant.
The highlight of the event will most likely be this year’s new iPhones, but Apple will also release OS X El Capitan to the public alongside a host of other products.
While the date is not set in stone (watch this space), we are fairly certain the below products will make an appearance.
iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus
While this year’s iterations of last year’s iPhone 6’s are expected to look identical to their predecessors, Apple is seemingly making improvements under the hood. Rumors suggest the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will come in the same two sizes, 4.7-inches and 5.5-inches respectively, but feature a new A9 processor with 2GB of RAM, improved battery life, a new user interface thanks to the addition of Force Touch and (maybe) a stylus.
Other improvements include a new LTE chip capable of double the download speeds of the current version and a new 12-megapixel camera capable of shooting SLR-quality images. The selfies snapping FaceTime camera may also see a significant upgrade this time around.
New iPads
Despite its declining sales in a shrinking market, Apple’s iPad continues to dominate across many enterprise industry sectors. Apple is looking to exploit this advantage with the rumored release of a 12.9-inch ‘iPad Pro’ which, combined with the new iPad multitasking features coming in iOS 9, is aimed squarely at business users.
Also expected to see an update this fall, are the iPad mini and iPad Air, with more powerful processors, improved displays and the addition of Force Touch across the range.
Revamped Apple TV
Marking its first update since 2012, Apple TV is expected to receive a significant upgrade, including a slimmer design, Apple’s new A8 chip, an increase in onboard storage, and support for Siri voice control. Apple is also rumored to release a dedicated Apple TV App Store alongside the new hardware, including an Apple TV SDK for developers.
What we won’t see is Apple’s planned streaming TV service; rumors suggest the company has delayed the launch until early 2016.
iOS 9 and Apple WatchOS 2
Currently in its fifth developer beta, iOS 9 will likely see general release on the same day as Apple’s September launch event. iOS 9 brings a slew of new features and enhancements which we have covered extensively, including a more intelligent Siri, Proactive assistant, public transit info in Maps, a new News app, new messaging features, improved battery life and performance, and many more.
At the same time, the release of watchOS 2 will see the arrival of native apps for Apple Watch improved Wi-Fi capabilities making the Watch a little less reliant on a connected iPhone.
