An uncensored lesbian sex game will soon be on Steam
Steam will soon have its first ever uncensored erotic game, at least according to the creators of a Japanese-style visual novel called Kindred Spirits on the Roof. The developers say that the game will not pull any punches with the sex scenes—that is, unless Steam’s creator, Valve Corp, decides to change its mind on a whim.
“Everything will be open and up-front with this release; no off-site patch or workarounds,” Kindred Spirits’ head translator promised in a blog post. “Everything will be open and up-front with this release; no off-site patch or workarounds.Kindred Spirits will be sold on Steam completely uncensored. Seeing frank depictions of same-sex relationships welcomed on such a major gaming platform is a true testament to the open-mindedness of our society and the growing desire for mature entertainment that people of all walks of life can enjoy.”
There has been a lot of back and forth in regards to censorship on Steam. In fact, Valve seems to flip-flop on its stances so often it is hard to tell where the company stands on anything. For example, they might roll out paid mods for games like Skyrim, saying that this is the way things are going to be from now on, and then cave to the pressure from fans and drop the model altogether a week later.
The company had similar changes of heart regarding censorship, such as when it pulled mass murder game Hatred from Steam Greenlight, only to add it back later after the Steam community cried foul.
Kindred Spirits would not be the first adult-themed game on Steam—far from it. For example, one of the games currently on the list of Steam’s most popular titles under $10 is HuniePop, an anime-inspired game that is part dating sim, part strip-Bejeweled. The non-Steam version of HuniePop features uncensored nude images, but in order to sell the game on Steam, the developers were forced by Valve to alter the pictures to be a little more tame, covering up the naughty bits and removing any…fluids.
Interestingly, Valve does not censor sex scenes that occur in Western-style games such as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, but perhaps Kindred Spirits is a sign that Valve might be changing its stance…again.
