Qualcomm buys Capsule Technologie to boost Internet of Medical Things push

Qualcomm Inc., which is best known for making the semiconductor chips found in smartphones, has acquired a French clinical data company called Capsule Technologie Inc. for an undisclosed fee.

Qualcomm said the plan is for Capsule to be absorbed into its subsidiary Qualcomm Life, an entity that’s focused on selling remote monitoring technology to hospitals. The companies seem to be a very good fit, because Capsule’s medical device integration and clinical data management platform enables data collection, electronic medical records (EMRs) and health IT system integration and monitoring within an ecosystem of connected devices inside the hospital.

To date, Qualcomm Life’s focus has been on connecting home healthcare devices with hospitals and ensuring the data those machines collect gets back to the doctors who need it. The acquisition of Capsule however, should see it move into the business of connecting devices inside the hospital to EMR and IT systems.

“Qualcomm is focused on strengthening its position in specific Internet of Everything verticals, like healthcare,” Derek Aberle, president, Qualcomm Inc. said in a statement. “The acquisition of Capsule expands the breadth of our healthcare platform, enabling us to provide connectivity solutions for the entire care continuum and create one of the world’s largest connected health ecosystems. This will be an important step in advancing the Internet of Medical Things.”

Capsule’s main product is the SmartLinx Medical Device Information System. The system collects data from various medical devices, then formats that data and passes it onto systems for clinical documentation, clinical decision support, alarm management, or clinical research. The system can also collect and analyze data about the devices and machines themselves, allowing hospitals to keep an eye on the health of its medical devices.

As an added bonus for Qualcomm, Capsule brings with it more than 1,930 hospital customers in 38 countries. The company maintains offices in Andover, MA, Dubai, Paris, Sao Paulo in Brazil, Singapore and Sydney.
