Time for Hadoop to ‘grow up and get real’ | #BigDataNYC
It’s been a neck-and-neck race among providers to harness the power of Hadoop and bring valuable solutions to the enterprise. The industry has presented some good options, but so far a clear leader has yet to emerge.
Justin Borgman, vice president and general manager, Teradata Corp.’s Center for Hadoop, joined John Furrier and George Gilbert on theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, to comment about the value Presto can bring to the enterprise.
A need to foster value
Putting it very bluntly, Furrier started out the interview by saying, “It is time for Hadoop to grow up and get real. They need to develop real business models around Hadoop and learn how to foster value.”
Teradata offers enterprise solutions that enable SQL query engines to be enterprise ready for Hadoop. According to Borgman, the company uses open-source Presto by delivering high-performing, enterprise-class Open Database Connectivity (ODBC ). “It started with the need to run at Internet scale, and it has a great foundation. The role of Presto is to bring to bear enterprise value,” he said.
As always, ease of use is a factor in leveraging value for the end user. Borgman explained that the gaps in the ecosystem are the company’s strengths. Installation is easy, and the ODBC connects with the user’s tools.
Room to grow
With big names like Facebook and Netflix, Inc. adding software to the Presto project, things are moving quickly. Borgman admitted that there are still some things to add, such as an SQL platform and security. He feels that by 2016 the project will be up to speed.
