“I come here to connect the dots and see where things are going,” says theCUBE alumni Jerry Chen, partner of Greylock Partners, in an interview at Amazon re:Invent 2015 in Las Vegas.
Speaking from his point of view as a venture capitalist, during Amazon re:Invent 2015 in Las Vegas, Chen told John Furrier, cohost of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, that he believes the early cloud opportunities have been played out, and the market is now looking to what the cloud enables. He asked the question: “Is cloud a winner take all or winner take most business market?”
Chen is studying the rate of change and growth of the companies attending the show, as well as Amazon itself. “Amazon.com is amazing,” he said, referring to what he calls the “inevitable march” of Amazon announcing more products.
Furrier asked Chen his take on the blitzscaling model for enterprise, and the two discussed Stanford University’s online course ‘Technology-enabled Blitzscaling.’ Agreeing with Furrier that “start-up is easy, but scale-up is the challenge,” Chen listed the challenges faced by companies, summarizing with, “The hardest part for a start-up is getting the distribution.” However, he sees a positive change with the cloud and SaaS changing distribution models. “Buying has been decentralized,” he said. “As a start-up, I can sell to multiple channels.”
The biggest wave of the past 10 years has been cloud mobile, Chen told Furrier, with the new focus on systems of intelligence and machine learning. “All that change percolates through this room,” he said. “Who knows what comes next?”
