Star Citizen gets star studded cast for Squadron 42, including Gary Oldman, Andy Serkis, and more

Despite the occasional delays and a few inflammatory news reportsStar Citizen remains one of the most highly anticipated games in development, and over the weekend developer Cloud Imperium Games raised expectations again with the announcement of a star studded cast for the game’s “cinematic single-player epic adventure,” Squadron 42.

The cast list is led by award winning actor Gary Oldman, who is known for a wide range of diverse roles that include Jim Gordon in the Christopher Nolan Batman films, Sirius Black in Harry Potter, and dozens more. Oldman will be playing Admiral Ernst Bishop, a military leader described as “capable of disconnecting his empathy to the point where a battleship is simply an asset (with strengths and weaknesses) in the game, not a ship of five hundred souls.”

Oldman is the only actor to have his role in the game listed at the moment, but the cast list includes a several nerd-favorite actors, including Gillian Anderson (Dana Scully in The X Files), Andy Serkis (Gollum in The Lord of the Rings), and others. Squadron 42 will also see the return of some of the actors involved in Star Citizen creator Chris Roberts’ classic Wing Commander games, including Mark Hamill and John Rhys Davies.

“I think they’re going to bring another level of performance and emotion to the game,” Roberts told fans at CitizenconStar Citizen’s own fan convention in England.

The game uses performance and motion capture for its roles, and Oldman’s character is a clear representation of the actor’s likeness. Roberts noted that the performances are also rendered in real-time within the game engine rather than as pre-rendered cinematics.

Speaking of Squadron 42 specifically, Roberts said, “I would put it up as a standalone project next to any triple-a, big publisher, big budget game. I’m 100 percent confident that it could go toe to toe with any of those games and come out on top.”
