Smart camera knows best shots to share

There are plenty of action cameras available today, each with various features for specific needs. From waterproof to 4k resolution and WiFi capabilities for immediate uploads to Instagram, it seems today’s cameras are capable beyond their years. But what about intelligent features, such as pre-selecting the best footage to share with followers and fans?

Today Waylens, Inc. announced the launch of its Kickstarter PBC campaign to fund the development of its Waylens camera, which is described as the camera for auto enthusiasts who want to capture road footage, as well as take note of their vehicle’s performance at the same time. Already Waylens has exceeded its Kickstarter funding goal, more than doubling its initial $55k request.

Specifications

Waylens_fullThe systems comes with the Waylens HD camera, camera-to-OBD data siphon, which connects to your vehicle’s OBD-II port, and a steering wheel remote.

The camera itself features a GPS, 9-axis motion sensor, and support for Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi 802.11. It also features a 7-element lens nestled within a full metal lens barrel, and a large, state-of-art Sony CMOS sensor that pairs with a 28nm high performance video processor.

All scenarios are captured in full 1080p at 60 frames per second, with dual microphones capturing the symphony of exhaust notes, and a completely circular retina OLED touchscreen display, which doubles as a user-definable gauge, expanding the dashboard to include any of the available data streams in real time. The camera also comes with a rechargeable Li-ion battery, barometer, and a 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 CPU.

The camera can be easily mounted onto the windshield using the included suction cup. Make sure your windshield is clean before attaching the suction cup and tightening the bolt. When the mount is securely in place, attach the camera to the base of the mount, adjust the position and you’re done. The camera can be rotated 360 degrees to capture either what’s happening on the road or what’s happening inside your car.

The camera operates either by using the rechargeable battery or by plugging it in in your vehicle’s 12v cigarette lighter socket.

What it does

The Waylens camera automatically turns on when the vehicle is started and will automatically capture moments based on the data from the camera, as well as data sent by the plugin. Waylens is able to filter out a driver’s best moments or best clips by considering various factors, such as the highest G force or fastest accelerations.

Waylens_pluginAccording to Waylens, by the time a driver pulls over to take a look at the footage, the mobile app has automatically created ready-to-share video clips, which are presented in a simple interface. The steering wheel remote allows drivers to easily share their clips with others even if they are still driving, as it only requires one touch to do so and it won’t take away your attention away from the road. You can also edit your footage using the mobile app. The mobile app allows users to search and filter moments using data to hone in on the important events.

“We saw the need not only for a high-quality camera that specifically caters to driving enthusiasts, but one that was at an affordable price point that allows for a user-friendly, seamless experience,” said Haowei Zhang, cofounder and CEO of Waylens, Inc.

The Waylens camera is available for pre-order starting at $249 on Kickstarter, and the product plans to ship in 2016.

Is Waylens for you?

If you’re an extreme sports enthusiast, the Waylens camera is probably not the right choice for you. Though Waylens is an action camera, it is quite different from the GoPro action camera as it is directed specifically at drivers who may want to learn more about their driving techniques for improvement purposes (and showing off, of course).
