End-to-end products look to be dead in a growing world of open source. But, there’s still a niche to be had for those who provide a comprehensive platform, especially to medium- and small-sized firms.
Dave Vellante and George Gilbert, cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, sat down with Donna Prlich, VP of product marketing at Pentaho Corp., to get her perspective on the industry and to explain what, exactly, Pentaho is.
The tagline goes “Business Intelligence for Big Data” in reference to Pentaho, according to Prlich. She was quick to explain that Pentaho is more than just a business intelligence platform. Pentaho is an end-to-end user product that acts as a “heatshield” for Big Data. It does everything from providing options for presentations like dashboards to creating pipelines for real-time data with high levels of governance. That’s part of what makes it particularly attractive and better differentiated in the field.
Though end-to-end platforms are preferred by smaller businesses, Pentaho is looking to target large ones as well. It is able to offer some distinct advantages to Big Data companies. In an industry with changing technologies, it is responsive to changes. In an example by Prlich, she explained that when customers needed a better Hadoop solution, the company was there to provide one.
Its ability to track data marks them as a notable market leader as Big Data companies are often fighting to a losing battle of tracking the data’s movement in a sea of connections.
