Smart, foldable bike is made for techie urbanites

In 1915, a new form of transportation was introduced to the inhabitants of New York called the Autoped, a motorized scooter made by Autoped Company of Long Island City. Now, 100 years later, the concept of the Autoped has been revitalized in the form of FlyKly, Inc.’s Smart Ped.

FlyKly is the maker of the Smart Wheel, a lightweight, highly efficient pedal assist wheel that makes biking easier and smarter.

Specifications

FlyKly Smart PedThe same technology of the Smart Wheel has been applied to the Smart Ped. The Smart Ped is described as a practical kick-assist e-bike that’s also foldable, making it easier to carry through urban settings such as buses and trains, on an elevator, and even in the office.

What makes it different from other kick-assist scooters is that one kick sends you off further because of the 250W motor that is powered by a 29.6V Li-ion battery that fully charges in three hours. It will deliver a top assisted speed of 16mph and a single charge can help you travel 18-30 miles in a breeze.

The frame of the Smart Ped is made from steel, has front and rear V-brakes, and 16” wheels. The platform of the Smart Ped is designed to accommodate both feet and can carry a max load of 120Kg or about 264 lbs. The Smart Ped weighs about 24 lbs, which makes it easy to carry with you anywhere. Smart Ped will come in white and black colors, but the Special Edition comes in a variety of colors.

Smart features

The Smart Ped features sensors for kick detection, mass estimation, friction estimation, speed and acceleration, as well as Bluetooth high energy so it can connect with the BitRide app for Android and iOS.

BitRide appThe BitRide app helps you track your ride, offers suggestions for alternate routes, and creates tailor made reports on how much money, time and carbon footprint you are saving. You can also use the BitRide app to control the Smart Ped, possibly similar to how the Smart App for the Smart Wheel can extend the range, boost speed, adjust brake or assist level, and even use it to lock and unlock it. The BitRide also has some social features which allows you to connect with your friends to share ride info and stats.

The Smart Ped is ready for production and that’s what it will be doing with the funds it will raise on Kickstarter PBC. If you’re one of the early backers of Smart Ped, you can now download the BitRide app to get updates on the campaign on production and delivery status. Forty-five backers have already pledged €32,469 out of the €100,000 (about $114,000) funding goal, with still 42 days left on its campaign.
